After he finished his mechanical apprenticeship and joined the salmon farming industry. He grew salmon on the east and west coast for 15 years until an opportunity to work at Hobart Ports arose and his love of big boat skippering was realised.
In his spare time, he delivered power boats and yachts with his father and completed two Sydney - Hobart races as well as many offshore races in Tasmania, including Launceston to Hobart and the Three Peaks Race.
In 2004, he and his first wife Lesa took a leap of faith and sailed their 31ft Camper & Nicholson yacht across Bass Strait and up the east coast of Australia on a working holiday. They spent 18 months cruising and working in many beautiful places including the town of 1770 where Mick worked onboard Spirit of 1770, taking up to 200 passengers to Lady Musgrave Island.
